I wanted people to be intimidated by him, but intrigued, at the same time. When I step into a project, I need to feel that there's a challenge, something new, something fresh about it."That's what got me excited about it, the fact that I saw it as an interesting challenge—to make a character that could have just as easily been a villain or too predatory...
It's unclear why Skarsgård decided to dress in drag, but it's suspected his look may have been a nod to his co-star Joshua Grannell, a drag performer named Peaches Christ who plays a transvestite in the film.
Skarsgård, who stands tall at 6-foot-4, previously played a transvestite in the 2006 Swedish film based on Phoebe Gloeckner's graphic novel set in 1976, Skarsgård plays Monroe, a 35-year-old man who is dating Chloe (Kristen Wiig) and later begins an affair with her 15-year-old daughter Minnie (Powley).
"(I thought), ' How can we find moments where he's not in control or where he is confused, and find moments that are beautiful and real where he might be like the teenage boy and she is the mature woman?

Bel Powley and Alexander Skarsgard are sitting on a bed. In their indie dramedy “The Diary of a Teenage Girl,” the film they’re here to talk about, they play, respectively, Minnie, a teenager in first blush with her sexuality, and Monroe, her mother’s boyfriend, with whom she is sleeping.
(The mother is played by Kristen Wiig, who is not present.) They have the kind of goofy rapport that comes with actors who’ve had to fake intimacy through real trust. Alex was my first onscreen kiss,” Powley says, dispensing a laugh Skarsgard shares.
Skarsgård gave serious Farrah Fawcett vibes with his feathered wig, and he wore a floor-length gold dress that was cinched at the waist.
He posed with Bel Bowley and director Marielle Heller.
"Hart and Johnson returned to the stage in costumes: Johnson wore a Superman suit and Hart donned a Batman costume.
They began to threaten all of the actors in the audience who had played superheroes before, including Chris Pratt, who just shrugged.
That being said, I'm kind of attracted to characters with a darkness or a sadness that they carry with them.
